Our Story

In the Heart of Change: UHURU Walk

For nine years, UHURU Walk has been a beacon of hope and action in Tanzania. Organised by Meadows Schools, this movement was born from a powerful vision – to break down language barriers and give every disadvantaged child a fair chance at a brighter future.

What began as one person’s passion has grown into a vibrant, steadily expanding collective effort. Year after year, the number of children we support through quality English literacy and cognitive skills development continues to increase, transforming young lives and opening doors of opportunity.

At the core of our work is the belief that real change starts with the fundamentals – learning letter by letter, word by word, hand in hand. We focus on the most vulnerable children in our society, equipping them with the language confidence and thinking skills they need to become the future leaders of our nation.

None of this would be possible without the generous and consistent support of the business community, corporate partners, sponsors, and thousands of well-wishers who walk with us every year. Your belief in our mission fuels our progress and reminds us that together, we can rewrite the story for children who deserve every opportunity.

Complementing our educational work is our highly successful youth-led event management and leadership program. Young people take ownership in planning and executing our annual UHURU Walk – a joyful, symbolic community event featuring walking, running, cycling, and fun activities. This program not only raises vital funds but also nurtures the next generation of organisers, leaders, and change-makers.

UHURU Walk is more than an annual event. It is a continuous journey of resilience, inclusivity, and collective action. Every step symbolises our commitment to dismantling barriers, amplifying voices that were once whispers, and building a more equitable Tanzania where every child can learn, dream, and thrive.

As we enter our 9th year, we remain deeply grateful to every organiser, volunteer, sponsor, participant, and partner who has walked alongside us. Your support has helped us touch more lives than ever before.

Join us. Walk with us. Be part of a movement that believes education is freedom – and that together, we can create lasting change, one child and one step at a time.

Welcome to the UHURU Walk family.

Annual Event

Held in Dar-es-Salaam, Uhuru Walk is an annual event welcoming over a thousand participants annually for a walkathon, treasure hunt, marathon and cycling event.

This event is more than just a day out; it's a perfect opportunity for families and friends to come together, have fun, and support a meaningful cause. Beyond the joy of exercise and camaraderie, participants stand a chance to win from an impressive pool of over 200 prizes, along with certificates and medals.

Make a difference and mark your calendars annually for Uhuru Walk - an event where the community gathers for an unforgettable day of fun, connections, and giving back.

Teaching Children

We dedicate weekly sessions to crafting and conducting engaging English lessons for children aged 3-10. Guided by child expert and curriculum designer Gulbanu Suleman, alongside team leader and mentor Sarah Suleman, these classes aim to equip children with the language skills vital for their self-reliant futures in a globalized world.

In an increasingly interconnected world, proficiency in English is pivotal for children seeking independent paths toward success. For those unable to comprehend and communicate in English, the opportunities become scarce, perpetuating cycles of poverty. Our mission is to bridge this gap for special, disadvantaged children supported by Uhuru Walk.

Training Volunteers

We have two branches of comprehensive volunteer training programs, focused at equipping individuals with invaluable skills

Education Outreach
We train volunteers in delivering Individualised Education Programs (IEP) tailored for disadvantaged children. Through our comprehensive training, volunteers learn the intricacies of lesson implementation and English language teaching (ESL). This training empowers them to create engaging and effective learning experiences, nurturing a supportive environment for these children to thrive academically.

Event Organizing
In parallel, our volunteer programs also into the realm of event organizing, encompassing every aspect from fundraising strategies to meticulous planning, seamless teamwork, and flawless execution. Volunteers gain hands-on experience in managing diverse elements of event coordination, honing crucial skills in leadership, organization, and teamwork essential for successful project management.
