How do we move from home to Meadows Academy? How do we travel from one city to the next? Does an airplane carry the same thing that a garbage truck would? Better yet, can it cover the same distance? This week’s lesson was all about answering these, and many more questions! Using expert Early Learning Education resources from Meadows Academy,…
Xpress Rent-a-Car Teaches a Skill | Sponsor Teach-a-Skill Project
Xpress Rent a Car is one of our longest standing supporters. By that virtue, they were the first to kickstart our Sponsor Teach-A-Skill Project with a beautifully handled lesson. Mr. Jawad and Mr. Audiwaas (Xpress Rent a Car’s manager and head mechanic respectively) practically guided the children in an exploration of the parts of a car’s interior, the parts of…
Gifts Under the Christmas Tree | English Literacy Classes
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the team of VT’s and children at Uhuru Walk English Literacy Classes. It was our last class of the year 2021! We decorated our very own Christmas tree with handmade ornaments and spied for festival items around us in a game of I-Spy. The younger ones played with snow, making snow chapati’s and winter…
Regulating Emotional ‘Eggspressions’ | English Literacy Classes
Wrapping up our month of classes on Emotions was a bustling, laughter-filled and energetic lesson. In this lesson, we worked with the children to understand and practice various strategies of emotional regulation.
World Kindness Day
On 13th November 2021, children from Meadows Academy and other well-wishing donors celebrated World Kindness Day, pooling together stashes of storybooks, clothes, toys, and food items in large quantities for the beneficiaries of Uhuru Walk. Some of them even joined our weekly classes to spend time with the children as mini-volunteering teachers. While reading books and completing worksheets together, the…
Expressing the ‘Why?’ in ‘I Feel’ | English Literacy Classes
Over the last two weeks, our lessons were driven by the understanding that children from disadvantaged backgrounds are substantially more vulnerable when they struggle to identify, articulate, and validate their emotions. In these lessons we taught the expression of ‘why?’ in relation to personal feelings and facilitated deeper emotional curiosity in the children through classroom assessments, games and fun play.
If You’re Feeling and You Know It… | English Literacy Classes
Learning about the language of emotions has been one of our most engaging classes yet, for both our thoughtful students and our playful Volunteering Teachers. In this lesson, we focused on equipping our learners with the invaluable tools of articulating their emotions in English. How many different emotions can you spot in their work and on their faces?
Feeling our Feelings | English Literacy Classes
We excitedly handed over our class this week to our sponsors, licensed Counseling Psychologist Amaechi Nduka-Agwu and Child and Youth Counselor Rehema Busch, for an Emotional Mindfulness Session. Children from disadvantaged backgrounds have fewer opportunities to explore, let alone regulate, their emotions. Understanding emotional expression, as skilfully directed by Amaechi and Rehema, provided them with the opportunity to better understand…
Make a Meal | English Literacy Classes
Learning about nutrition encompasses more than just knowing what is healthy and unhealthy. This week, we built our plates with a healthy mix of foods from all food groups and learned the advantages of eating foods from each food group. The children also role-played as chefs building fruit and vegetable salads, giving them a practical opportunity to engage with lesson…
Get Moving for Some Exercise & Hygiene | English Literacy Classes
This week, we learned over twenty new action verbs for various exercises, and explored the influence of exercise on more sophisticated body organs. Big smiles whizzed by the camera as we incorporated fun games and work-outs into our class. You should know – most of our students are Simba FC fans and take kicking practice very seriously!
